TEAM LACBC Diversity Rider Program Receives Support from the Laemmle Foundation and Climate Ride

DEADLINE FOR RIDER NOMINATIONS IS MARCH 31

Generous support from the Laemmle Charitable Foundation and the Climate Ride Scholarship Fund has enabled Team LACBC to expand its Diversity Ridership program and offer more spots on the team to members of the community.

Now in its fourth year, TEAM LACBC is seeking to expand and diversify its membership through a community nomination process, accessible at www.la-bike.org/climateridediversity.

TEAM LACBC participates annually in Climate Ride California (May 22-26), providing L.A. cyclists with an opportunity for adventure and a vehicle for them to raise money and awareness around issues of the environment and climate change.

Riders chosen as a result of the nominating process will receive $2500 toward the minimum Climate Ride fundraising requirement of $2800. In addition, they will receive:

  1. Free Climate Ride registration ($100 value)

  2. Free transportation on the Climate Ride shuttle from San Francisco to the start of the ride in Fortuna, CA ($150 value)

  3. Equipment support of up to $1000 (cycling and camping gear, as needed)

  4. Transportation assistance to San Francisco (as needed)

Climate Ride California is a 5-day, fully-supported, annual group charity ride that benefits qualified agencies, including LACBC, that work on issues of the environment, alternative transportation, and climate change. This year, the ride will begin near Eureka, CA on May 22 and conclude 330 miles later on May 26 in San Francisco.

This epic experience begins with riders pedaling through the awe-inspiring Redwood National Park before heading out to explore the stunning northern California coast. The ride comes to a crescendo on the last day with a climb up Mt. Tam, a procession over the Golden Gate Bridge, and a closing ceremony attended by supporters and local dignitaries.

For several years, TEAM LACBC has been the largest, most spirited, and highest money-raising team on the ride. This year, LACBC is seeking to reach out to potential members who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in Climate Ride.

Says LACBC Executive Director Tamika Butler, “With the help of the Laemmle Foundation, the Climate Ride Scholarship Fund, and other potential sponsors, we look forward to TEAM LACBC becoming more reflective of the enormous energy and rich diversity of the communities and neighborhoods we serve.”

Greg Laemmle of the Laemmle Foundation says, “Supporting Team LACBC’s diversity initiative aligns perfectly with our mission of creating a healthier, more livable, and more inclusive Los Angeles.”

Caeli Quinn, co-founder of Climate Ride, echoes Laemmle’s remarks. “Utilizing our scholarship fund to assist Team LACBC furthers our goal of encouraging diversity and mentorship in the environmental and active transportation movements,” she states. “We want to build a diverse network of young leaders,” she adds.

The deadline for nominating a Diversity Rider is coming up! Entries must be received by March 31, via LACBC’s online form. Nominations are open to the public and even include a “self-nomination” option. Riders will be selected from the pool of nominees by a panel of judges comprised of LACBC staff and board members.

TEAM LACBC is not only calling for nominations, but it invites the entire community to join the 2016 Climate Ride experience — whether as an official member of the team, a financial contributor, team-member supporter, or training companion.

Cyclists from around the region are invited to participate in team training rides. which will be held each weekend from now until the ride commences in late May. Get the details on these rides from the team’s Facebook page or via LACBC’s newsletter (info provided below).
