Sunday Funday: South LA
August 5 @ 9:30 am - 1:00 pm
Join LACBC for our August Sunday Funday ride as we explore South LA and ride to the Watts Towers! We’ll visit some historic landmarks and neighborhood gems, including Fremont High (which is alma mater to such illustrious grads as Dr. Dre), and Frederick Price High School, the former campus of Pepperdine University. We’ll continue on to quench our thirst and refuel our tanks at Roi Choi’s famous spot, LocoL. Opening its doors for the first time in 2015, LoCoL was created to bring fast and healthy food options to areas often characterized as food deserts. Three years later, it’s a staple in Los Angeles, and a favorite among carnivores and vegetarians alike. Plus, their fresh juices (which cost $1. You read that right) are an amazing way to cool down after a ride.
Finally, we’ll finish off our ride by pedaling to the the Watts Towers. An amazing visual art piece built over the course of 33 years, the Watts Towers, or Nuestro Pueblo, is Simon Rodia’s masterpiece created from found objects. Made from rebar and mesh, the towers are covered with items like glass bottles, seashells, ceramic pieces, and other items collected from around the area. Neighborhood kids would bring Simon pieces to add to his towers, and the artist would also often walk the Pacific Electric right-of-way 20 miles from Watts to Wilmington to look for materials. Now, the Watts Towers Arts Center sits next door to the towers, and displays rotating exhibits of contemporary artworks.
We hope you join us for Sunday Funday: South LA! Sunday Funday is a no-drop ride, special thanks to the LACBC Ride Marshals. Riders should be able to keep a 10-12 MPH pace. All riders under 18 must wear a helmet.
