History Ride "Historic Neighborhoods of Glendale"Meeting Location: Chess Park on Brand Blvd. (227 N. Brand Blvd). Meeting Time: 9:00 a.m. Description: Take your bicycle on a ride through Glendale's historic neighborhoods with members of the Glendale Historical Society leading the way. The Ride will be about 12 miles, at a slow to moderate pace with multiple stops. Helmets are mandatory. Rain cancels the ride. Time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Description: Get ready for Bike to Work Day by visiting this Bike Fair organized by Glendale Transportation Management Associates and the LACBC. Documentary Screening - "Klunkerz" with Billy SavageLocation: Glendale Central Library Auditorium (222 East Harvard Street) Time: 7:00 p.m. Parking: Bike racks are located in front of the Central Library. Car parking is in the lot across Harvard. Library validates for 3 hours. Description: Meet director Billy Savage whose film chronicles the birth and growth of mountain bikes. In the late 1960's and early 1970's a handful of hippie cyclists literally reinvented the wheel. These early pioneers scavenged frames from dumpsters and junkyards and lifted parts from road bikes and motorcycles to build a better way down the mountain. Little did they realize that their obsessive tinkering would ultimately lead to the birth of a multi-billion dollar industry and an Olympic sport. These modified bikes became affectionately known as "Klunkerz". Question and answer session with the director after the screening. Charlie Gandy - "Making Long Beach Bike-Friendly and What It Means for Glendale"Location: Glendale Central Library Auditorium (222 East Harvard Street) Time: 7:00 pm

Library validates for 3 hours.Description: Charlie Gandy is a nationally recognized leader and innovator in the livable communities movement. The bold statement made three years ago by the Long Beach City Council to become the "most bike-friendly city in America" attracted Gandy's attention and ultimately lured him from Austin Texas to Long Beach to work on that agenda as Mobility Coordinator for the City. Gandy has worked as a political activist on the livable communities agenda professionally since 1990. He was one of the catalysts behind the creation of the Thunderhead Alliance, the Bikes Belong Campaign and several state and local advocacy organizations. He was the founder and first executive director of the Texas Bicycle Coalition, which has grown to be a strong model of political leadership. Gandy will discuss bike improvements being made in Long Beach and how they relate to Glendale. | |||||
