Sharrows in Glendale? Yes!

We now have sharrows in Glendale! Shared Roadway Markings, or sharrows as they are most commonly called, are a relatively new street marking for bicyclists. Their main purpose is to guide cyclists to ride outside the “door zone”, the area next to parked cars where a cyclist could collide with a door opened by a motorist. The new sharrows have been painted on Grandview Ave. from Glenoaks Blvd. to Brand Park. By painting the sharrows on Grandview, the City of Glendale has officially made it a Class III bike route as recommended in the Glendale Bikeway Master Plan. For cyclists, this provides a connection from the bike lanes on Glenoaks to Brand Park as well as connecting to Kenneth Road, another street that’s popular with cyclists in the area. Grandview is the first of many proposed Class III bike routes in Glendale that could also be implemented using sharrows. Glendale is now one of a handful of cities in Los Angeles County to put sharrows on the street. The other cities are Pasadena, Long Beach, and Hermosa Beach (where they just painted sharrows recently as well). Congratulations Glendale!
Burbank’s New Bicycle Master Plan
A new Bicycle Master Plan for the City of Burbank is scheduled for possible adoption by the Burbank City Council on Tuesday, December 15, 2009. The plan includes routes that would be important for cyclists travelling to or from Glendale with a stated goal to coordinate with its neighboring municipalities. To download the Draft Bicycle Master Plan, click here. While it is a very good plan, it’s not clear if it will enjoy support from the community. A proposed bicycle project in south Burbank was met with strong resistance a few years ago. If you support improved bicycle infrastructure in Burbank, please attend the Burbank City Council meeting at 6 pm in the Burbank City Hall Council Chambers, 275 East Olive Avenue, and tell your Burbank cycling friends to go too! Bicyclists in the Montrose-Glendale Christmas Parade
A group of festive cyclists rode bicycles decorated with Christmas lights and other holiday decorations in the Montrose-Glendale Christmas Parade on Saturday December 5, 2009. The group included Glendale residents, Council Member Laura Friedman, two unicyclists, and a Los Angeles Derby Doll on rollerskates. Everyone had a blast and we thank all the people who came out to ride and waited patiently for our turn to roll! To see more pictures, click here. To read the Glendale News Press article, click here. Happy Holidays!
