Walk Bike Glendale – A New Group in Town
Calling all people who walk or ride a bike in Glendale! There’s a new group forming called Walk Bike Glendale and everyone is welcome to join. A website is in the works (it should be www.walkbikeglendale.org) and they have a Facebook page here.
The group has been engaging Glendale City Staff and the community in the update of the Bicycle Master Plan, advocating for bike racks in the Montrose Shopping Park, and working with City Staff to ensure the formation of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee which is included in the Safe & Healthy Streets Plan. They’ve also been working on organizational details like a mission statement, their name and logo, etc. as well as setting up to be a regional chapter of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. Members have been leading informal bike rides on Tuesday nights which are posted on Facebook here.

Ride and Walk in the Montrose-Glendale Christmas Parade
This year Walk Bike Glendale will lead a group of people in Glendale who walk and bike in the Montrose-Glendale Christmas Parade. In 2009 and 2010 we decorated our bikes with lights, dressed in green and red, and proudly paraded our way down Honolulu. It’s always a lot of fun and everyone is excited to ride and walk again this year. The parade will be on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 6 pm. Contact Rye Baerg (rbaerg (at) gmail (dot) com) to RSVP or for more information, or check out the Facebook event page here.
Final Safe & Healthy Streets Plan Is Now Online
The Safe & Healthy Streets Plan was formally adopted on April 19, 2011. Since then, only a “draft” word document has been available to the public while we’ve been working on the graphic design of the plan. A professional layout with photos and links was the last step needed to make the plan a truly finished work. We’re proud to announce the final document is now online and ready to download from the City of Glendale website as a PDF here! Once again we thank everyone who helped make the Safe & Healthy Streets a reality and we hope you like how the final document looks!

I like to ride my bike from Glendale to Griffith Park but always have to ride on the back streets since the major streets are not bikers friendly. Glendale needs more bike lanes on major streets or maybe a bridge that will have direct access to the river bike trail from the back area of San Fernando rd. to Griffith Park.

I’ve found it easiest to encourage businesses that cater to outdoor activities (even big chains like Sports Chalet) to install bike racks. It helps to point out that as the only business in a shopping area with secure bike parking, people will be more inclined toward unplanned walk-in shopping. The “community bike rack” attraction at the store quickly spreads as other businesses in the shopping area recognize the sales potential that bike racks hold.
Individual advocacy work wonders. Mention the need for a bike rack to store management, ask to park your bike inside while you shop (remarkably, most businesses are receptive!), or for Bike Friday Tikit riders like Diane Ledford, simply fold your bike and roll it through the store as your shopping cart. See video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSSgkcWqR6I. Then follow up with a hand-written letter to the local store (with copy to the Board of Directors of a big-box chain) thanking them for their interest in bike parking that you can scan and send to local media outlets by email, possibly with pictures of the store showing lack of secure bike parking. Even when it doesn’t work, the publicity raises public awareness of the need for secure bike parking areas. And that’s huge!

Carlos, thanks for your feedback. Keep your eyes open for the next community meeting for the Glendale Bicycle Master Plan update. If you can’t attend, submit your comments via the website. Updated information and comments can be found and submitted here: http://www.bikeglendale.org/
Regarding a bridge to Griffith Park, this is being considered by the Glendale Parks Department. Information about that is here: http://www.ci.glendale.ca.us/parks/GlendaleNarrowsRiverwalk.asp
